Nigeria: Journalist Union to establish micro bank

The Lagos State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) plans to establish a microfinance bank to guarantee a secured future for both serving and retired journalists.

The Chairman of the Council, Alhaji Wahab Oba, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos that the Council had inaugurated a committee to work out a blue-print on the bank.He said that the committee would work toward getting the licence “and as soon as this is done, the bank would take off.’’Oba said all media houses would be encouraged to own shares in the microfinance bank. He said the microfinance bank became imperative for the council to address what he described as “critical financial issues and guarantee a secured future for journalists.’’ “We found out that most of our members retire into penury without any means of livelihood.’’ He said that those that fell into this category were those who worked hard, put in everything they had and refused to compromise.
