Uganda: Chief Justice advises on media laws

The Chief Justice, Benjamin Odoki, has asked the Government to consider reviewing the existing media laws in light of the Supreme Court ruling that annulled the law on publication of false news.

Odoki said it was time that the Government removed laws that the courts have declared unconstitutional from the statute books.

“Parliament should ensure that such a review is informed by the need to confirm constitutional guarantees of press freedom and freedom of expression.

“With a clear signal from the courts, the Government doesn’t need to wait to be pressured into action,” Odoki said.

He was on Tuesday officiating at the launch of the Uganda Report on Public Broadcasting held at the Golf Course Hotel in Kampala.
