Angola: Minister urges need for thorough journalistic research

On 30 March 2010 in Luanda the Angolan Social Communication minister, Carolina Cerqueira, urged on the journalists to respect the truth in their research and investigation of facts.

The minister who was speaking at the closing of the seminar on "Violence in the Society", that started 29 March 2010 in Luanda, said she has often noted lack of rigour and truth in journalistic tests published in the country.

Cerqueira added that the sector she leads will continue encouraging a broad programme of training, through the Journalists Training Centre (CEFOJOR), to upgrade the professionals and improve their working methods, seeking for quality and contradictory principle.

The official also announced the Social Communication will outline a new feature for the sector, so the rights of the class be legally protected, thus avoiding the proliferation of slander that often runs against public moral, integrity and dignity of people, and disregard the holders of sovereign posts and the very sovereignty of the State and national unity.

"The Social Communication, both public and private, cannot stand indifferent to the process of moralisation of the society and the culture of accountability and respect for the public property", she emphasized.

The minister thus appealed to the class to abide by a new culture in the conduct of journalists, which promotes inclusion and participation of all in the construction of Angola, highlights and recognises the national effort and rejects the negative aspects like violence.

According to the minister, what makes the sector stronger and pluralist is the guarantee of a communication and privileges of a dynamic relation with the public, open to criticism, share of knowledge, confrontation of opinions and arguments, on a basis of security, trust and respect for diversity.

The event that went under the motto "Informing, preventing and intervening" was attended by members of Government, Parliament, sociologists, church officials, academics and other guests.
