Ethiopia: Addis media takes steps towards setting up council
A Press council organizing committee has been formed at a meeting which attracted professionals from different media professionals associations in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, according to a media release from the Eastern Africa Journalists Association.
One of the members of the organizing committee, Mimi Sibehatu, on the occasion said that the long-awaited establishment of the press council was now becoming a reality in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has been without a press council and cases of unethical conduct often find themselves in the courts.
The meeting which brought together journalists from private and public, electronic and print media, is believed to be a contribution towards establishing a self-regulation mechanism in Ethiopia.
The organizing committee also indicated that the council would have a crucial role in formulating a code of conduct for journalists and build ethical journalism in the country.
Background:
Ethiopia has no press council. Recently, a personnel code of conduct for journalists adopted by the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia on election reporting has created controversy.
