Angola: José Rodrigues Happy About Winning Journalism Prize

Luanda — The journalist of the private Luanda Antena Commercial (LAC) radio station, José Rodrigues, won the 2010 Journalism Maboque Prize.

For this victory José Rodrigues received USD 100.000. Speaking at the ceremony held in Luanda's Atlântico Cinema, the head of the jury of the referred event, Alves António, said that the choice of José Rodrigues as winner was on account of the journalist's serious, rigorous and professional work.

 

Speaking to the press, José Rodrigues manifested his happiness about the award, stressing that he will continue to work hard to better serve the public. Addressing the new generation of journalists, the winner said that dedication and humbleness are two factors that are part his character. Born on 28 October 1962, in the coastal Kwanza Sul Province, José Rodrigues has been in the radio side of journalism for about 25 years.

 

He started working as journalist at the state-owned National Radio of Angola (RNA). For the other categories, USD 20.000 was awarded to every winner. Regarding the vernacular languages, the presenter of the Angolan Public Television (TPA) in Cabinda, Malila Sambo, won in this category.

 

The prize of presenter of the year was awarded to Alexandre Cose of TPA, whilst Walter Fernandes of the Jornal Expansão newspaper won the prize of photography. The private TV Zimbo television was also awarded with USD 20.000 in the category of outstanding media organ, while the journalist of the daily newspaper of Jornal de Angola, Yara Simão was awarded for the category of Revelation Prize, for which she received a car.

 

Meanwhile, the honourable mention, estimated at USD 50.000, was not awarded for the fact that the jury has not found a work which deserved such prize. The jury of the event was comprised by the journalists Alves António (head of the jury), Francisco Mendes, Víctor Silva, Ana Lemos and Tandala Francisco.

 

Established in 1992 by César & Filhos Business Group, Journalism Maboque Prize is aimed at promoting and encouraging the Angolan journalism in the recognition of its importance for the consolidation of democracy and development of the country.
